Making More Out of The Treadmill
There are so many different types of treadmills available, that knowing
which one is the best treadmill for you. This article will provide
you with a treadmill buying guide, as well as showing you the benefits
of using a treadmill and the safety precautions you must take when
using one.
The treadmill is a piece of fitness equipment that allows you to
walk, jog or run without leaving the house. The treadmill moves
as you walk, so that you can walk in the same spot. This makes it
easier to walk at home, instead of leaving the house to get some
walking exercise.
The treadmill was first designed in 1875, to be used for animals.
Animals ran on the treadmill, powering mills or other equipment.
The first medical treadmill was invented in 1952 by cardiologist,
Robert Bruce. They used it to diagnose and evaluate heart and lung
disease. The machine was taken on by the fitness equipment industry,
which began designing treadmills similar to the ones we use today.
Types of Treadmills
There are two main types of treadmills, motorized treadmills and non-motorized
treadmills. With motorized treadmills, a motor powers the treadmill.
With a non-motorized treadmill, the exerciser powers the treadmill.
Within these two categories, treadmills can also be differentiated
according to the following factors and functions:
The size and storage space of the treadmill. There are
also fold-up treadmills, which use hardly any space. On the opposite
side are big, bulky treadmills that are more suitable for gyms.
The size of the walking area. This includes the length and
width of the treadmill. Some treadmills are available that have
a double deck, allowing you to walk your dog at the same time.
The sturdiness of the treadmill. Some treadmills are available
for children, which would not take an adult’s weight. People
who weight a lot will need to make sure they get a treadmill that
is designed for their weight.
Treadmill that are designed for specific purposes. For example,
some treadmills are specifically designed for walkers, whereas others
are designed for joggers.
Special functions. Treadmill functions include emergency
stopping, automatic slow starting, pulse recording and timing functions.
Many treadmills also come with inbuilt treadmill workouts.
How Do Treadmills compare To Other Home Fitness Equipment?
Treadmills are just one type of home fitness equipment available to
people who want to exercise at home. So how does it compare to the
other home fitness equipment out there?
Treadmills help us walk and jog – both natural activities
for the human body. Man was made to walk and jog, and when we walk
and jog we exercise in accordance with the natural movements of
our bodies. This is not true for much of the other fitness equipment,
which forces us to do exercises that are not natural for the human
body and may in fact involve movement we have never used before.
The other good thing about treadmills is that it is very easy to
create an exercise routine that is as easy or as difficult as you
want. Treadmills can be used for a slow gentle walk (which may be
necessary for people with medical conditions or people who have
not exercised for a while). For people who want a more vigorous
workout, an uphill jog can provide them with what they need.
Treadmills can also be used by the whole family. Even children
can make use of a treadmill; provided the speed is low and they
are supervised by an adult. Most other fitness equipment cannot
be used by children. Also, the treadmill does not need a lot of
adjustments to be made between different family members.
Treadmills Compared To Elliptical Machines
Elliptical machines also help the exerciser walk or jog. However,
the difference is that an elliptical machine works the upper body
and creates less of an impact on bones and joints. Many experts suggest
that the impact on the bones and joints actually helps the bones and
joints work properly. People with injuries may benefit from an elliptical
machine, but most reasonably healthy are better off exercising on
a treadmill. Also, elliptical machines are generally more expensive
and feel less natural than treadmills. See reviews of NordicTrack Treadmills.
